SUMMARY

Lead vehicle performance and emissions development projects involving ICE, HEV, and BEV testing on powertrain and chassis dynamometer testbeds

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Independently lead vehicle and powertrain dynamometer test cell activities with work instructions and test plans that can be used by the technicians and junior engineers to properly set up and execute the scope of a given vehicle development programs

  • Conduct detailed thermodynamic analyses of powertrain performance and emissions test results, prepare technical reports, papers and presentations based on those results:

             * P-V diagram analysis for combustion burn rates, mean effective pressure determination, etc.

             * Heat transfer analysis for emissions aftertreatment light off assessment, powertrain cooling systems heat rejection, etc.

             * Emissions aftertreatment system performance and efficiency analysis and HEV system optimization using regulated certification drive cycles

  •      * BEV system performance, range, and charging characteristics

  • Concisely summarize test results and data to a reportable format, make recommendations / direct future test plans based on information in these reports

  • Ensure that the test equipment used during each powertrain test program that he / she is involved with is properly calibrated, meets customer accuracy and repeatability requirements

  • Analyze ICE, HEV, & BEV performance and emissions technology trends and market demand to plan projects and understand customer requirements that will drive future business

  • Lead and participate in department continuous improvement activities, including process improvement, efficiency improvement and development of data analysis techniques

  • Provide technical contributions in a project team environment and mentor less experienced engineers/interns

  • Collaborate with department manager and / or program management staff to determine engineering feasibility, cost, and timing for vehicle powertrain development quotes

  • Assist with quoting activities for customer requests involving gasoline, diesel or electrified powertrain development testing

  • Maintain a working knowledge of new engine or electrified powertrain testing technologies that may improve testing operations and increase department efficiency

  • Communicate effectively with project management staff to ensure that project budget, timing, and quality requirements of his / her portion of the program scope are being satisfied

  • Prepare project reports, in Microsoft PowerPoint or Word format, for management, clients or potential clients

  • Employees duties are not limited to those stated above, but are inclusive of any tasks assigned by supervisor/manager

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, automotive, or equivalent engineering field is required. Master’s in mechanical, automotive, or equivalent engineering field is preferred.

  • Five or more years of related experience.

  • In depth knowledge of internal combustion engines, HEV & BEV systems, and light-duty vehicle and heavy-duty powertrain testing practices

  • Work effectively with a variety of people such as; management, design, calibration and technical staff, as well as customers and supplier representatives

  • Ability to recognize new business opportunities

  • Ability to prioritize work and resource, and work independently with minimal direction

  • Experience in data analysis and the presentation of testbed results to customer audiences

  • Logical and methodical approach to tasks

  • Strong Microsoft Office skills

  • Presentation & public speaking skills

  • Familiarity with industry standard calibration tools preferable (ATI Vision, ETAS Inca, ETAS ASCMO)

  • Familiarity with industry standard vehicle simulation & modelling tools preferable (IPG CarMaker, TruckMaker, Simulink, GT-Suite, EPA GEM)

  • Experience with advanced plotting packages preferable (Uniplot, MDA, Concerto)

  • Experience with both gasoline and diesel engines and electrified powertrain systems
