Your Role & Resposibilities:

To supervise the workflow through the metallurgical laboratory and offer administrative support to the Head of Technical Services. To perform technical analytical duties providing support to materials development projects. To undertake analysis work and prepare reports relating to rig & engine tested plain bearing components and internal benchmarking activities. The role also includes occasional support to production & quality related issues.  

  • Organise and prioritise the workflow through the metallurgical laboratory, communicate to team members on a supervisory level and provide a weekly update to the Head of Technical Services
  • Support the Head of Technical Services with administrative tasks including monthly timesheets, purchase approval, CAPEX requests and the staff appraisal and development processes
  • Perform the analysis of materials and components using SEM, optical microscopy and the range of available techniques
  • To interpret results and prepare technical reports relating to rig & engine tested bearings and internal benchmarking activities
  • Provide analytical support to materials development projects and support the manufacturing sites in terms of production & quality related issues as and when required
  • Supervise the preventative maintenance and calibration schedules for laboratory equipment
  • Maintain the analysis request, results and sample archive databases
  • Build a network of external links with academic institutions, analysis providers and equipment suppliers
  • Assist with continuous improvement of laboratory procedures through the QM Masterplan
  • Generate and collate the necessary data and assist with the creation of product specifications
  • Promote health and safety culture within the team and assist the Head of Technical Services to ensure compliance
  • Undertake any other reasonable duties defined by the Head of Technical Services

Qualifications  

  • Degree in Material Science or Metallurgy or relevant expereince

Your Skills and Experience  

  • A strong working knowledge of Scanning Electron Microscopy inc. X-ray microanalysis, optical microscopy and some image analysis is essential
  • A strong working knowledge of Materials Laboratory practices is essential
  • Have the ability to interpret results and good report writing skills are essential
  • Proven and established experience in Testing/Failure Analysis, Materials R&D in the Automotive, Aerospace or similar industry is essential
  • Experience creating & using databases is preferred
  • A knowledge of automotive bearing materials is desirableCompetencies 
  • Supervisory skills and team player
  • Natural analytical ability demonstrating a ‘value added’ approach
  • Proven ability to work effectively on own initiative
  • Good communication skills at all levels
