Machinist
SUMMARY
Must possess skills necessary to lay out metal stock; set up and operate machine tools; understand, fit and assemble parts; fabricate and repair metal components used on injection molds. Be knowledgeable of use and operations of cutting tools, jigs and fixtures, gauges, and machinists’ hand tools. Apply knowledge of tool design and construction; shop mathematics, metal properties, welding, grinding, machining and assembly procedures. Program and set up CNC milling machines and CNC lathe.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:
- Studies specifications, such as blueprints, sketches, models, or descriptions, and visualizes product to determine materials required and machines or processes required to fabricate parts.
- Strong understanding of safety procedures understanding the impact of potential working hazards.
- Compute dimensions, plan layouts, and determine assembly method and sequence of operations.
- Measures, marks, and scribes metal stock for cutting, machining, drilling or welding components or assemblies.
- Set up and operate machine tools, such as lathes, milling machines, shaper and grinder to machine parts and verify conformance of machined parts to specifications.
- Recognize and select the correct hardness (Rockwell Scale) of shafts, slides or contact surfaces to maximize operating life of machines, tools or equipment.
- Lifts machined parts manually or using a hoist, and positions and secures parts on surface plate or worktable using devices such as vises, V-blocks and angle plates.
- Smooths flat or contoured surfaces using scrapers, abrasives stones, and power grinders and fits and assembles parts together as well as into assemblies and mechanisms using hand tools.
- Verifies dimensions, alignments, and clearances using measuring instruments such as dial indicators, gauge blocks, thickness gauges, calipers and micrometers.
- Heat-treats tools or parts as required.
- Examine standard or previously used dies, tools, and jigs or fixtures, and recommend design modifications regarding construction and function of part.
- Develop specifications from general descriptions for specialty tools and draw or sketch design of product.
- Review sketches or drawings and prepare parts and labor estimates to assist in making correct business decisions to justify repairs or modifications.
- Maintain clean, organized, safe working environment with equipment and materials located in proper locations in accordance with 5S standards inside and outside of facility.
- Clean and maintain shop tools and equipment to retain good, safe operating order. Ability to work all designated shifts.

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
- High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) is required.
- 5 to 10 years of experience in machining and CNC milling machines.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Must be fluent in English. Able to read/write routine reports and correspondence. Able to communicate effectively with peers, managers, and directors, and to present to groups of customers or employees of the organization. Values and considers the perspectives and backgrounds of all parties.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to do mechanical math functions, including using decimals and fractions, an understanding of weights, temperatures, pressures and measurement conversion.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Strong analysis, problem solving, process and troubleshooting skills.
- Knowledge of Lean manufacturing principles.
- Dynamic communication / inter-personal skills.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, regularly required to stoop, kneel, sit, stand, bend, reach, climb, and move about the facility. Required to frequently lift up to 50 lbs.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, peripheral vision and ability to adjust focus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
While performing the duties of the job, may work prolonged periods under high heat and humid conditions inside the facility; and occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, and vibration.
The environment in manufacturing plants and testing labs are often loud, hot, and with particulates in the air. Working environment may contain potentially hazardous materials such as acids, solvents, oils, and common etchants. In such environments, adherence to PPE regulations is required.
OVERTIME
Employees must be able to work additional hours and/or additional days during the payroll week, which can and will be in excess of forty (40) hours per payroll week. Working overtime is a condition of employment.
TRAVEL
Domestic travel with/without overnight stay may be required.
