HSE Specialist

The Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE) Specialist serves in a key professional and advisory capacity, supporting the organization’s leadership team by developing, administering, and continuously improving site‑level health, safety, and environmental programs. This role is responsible for interpreting regulatory requirements, assessing operational risk, and exercising independent judgment to recommend and implement strategies that mitigate risk, ensure regulatory compliance, and advance a proactive safety culture.
The HSE Specialist operates with a high degree of autonomy and professional discretion, partnering with management and cross‑functional leaders to influence decision‑making related to compliance, sustainability, emergency preparedness, and continuous improvement initiatives aligned with company objectives and regulatory obligations.
This role is responsible to
- Oversees, evaluates, or ensures completion of preventative maintenance from a compliance perspective in accordance with regulatory and MAHLE requirements.
- Evaluates workplace hazards, environmental risks, and operational practices; develops and recommends corrective and preventive strategies that address matters of operational and regulatory significance.
- Researches, develops and implements the most effective safety and environmental improvement/action plans to improve metrics and reduce hazards and risk.
- Leads the planning, coordination, and execution of HSE audits, inspections, and compliance reviews, determining scope, priorities, and methodologies based on risk exposure and business impact.
- Serves as a subject‑matter resource for Health, Safety, and Environmental regulatory compliance, advising management and field leadership on risk mitigation, regulatory interpretation, and best practices,
- Plans, schedules and conducts HSE inspections, audits, and assessments, prioritizing work based on risk, regulatory exposure, and operational impact.
- Oversees and administers the facility’s environmental compliance programs, including waste management strategy, waste stream approvals, documentation standards, and vendor selection in alignment with corporate requirements; prepares and maintains waste manifest and/or shipping paperwork as required by regulatory and company.
- Provides professional consultation to site leaders and employees on best practices, behavioral safety, and regulatory requirements, influencing compliance and safety‑related decision‑making.
- Participates in and lead continuous improvement initiatives, including Kaizen events and cross‑functional projects, related to safety, environmental performance, and operational risk reduction.
- Coordinates with regulatory agencies, auditors, and internal stakeholders during inspections and compliance reviews
- Supports emergency preparedness planning and serve in a key advisory or leadership role during drills and response events
- Exercises independent judgment and professional discretion in prioritizing work, allocating time, and recommending solutions based on regulatory risk, severity, and business needs.
Your Experience & Qualifications
- Associates degree in Environmental Studies or Occupational Health and Safety in Environmental Studies or Occupational Health and Safety is strongly preferred.
- 3+ years of experience conducting safety or environmental inspections, supporting OSHA, EPA, or state regulatory compliance, completing incident reports and corrective action tracking & participating in audits or compliance reviews is required.
- Knowledge/experience in Physical/Chemical Wastewater Operation is strongly preferred.
- Must obtain certification in: RCRA/DOT; HAZWOPER, First Aid/CPR/AED and Forklift Train the Trainer within 6 months of hire.
- Must obtain Class A Wastewater certification after 1 year of hire.
- Must be able to adjust priorities accordingly, without being prompted, based on risk and business needs.
- Ability to learn all processes & procedures to evaluate & support from an HSE perspective.
- Able to access SDS sheets and the information contained therein.
- Must have strong initiative and the ability to work well in a team environment.
- Must have excellent communication skills and demonstrate the ability to use organizational agility to accomplish the goals of the business.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills are required.
- Ability to handle projects with multiple work streams, with proven leadership success over a wide variety of HSE related problems.
- Leads positively and optimistically.
